The Miramar Air Show, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, was ordered shut down as a result of the stand-off in Washington, D.C. between House Republicans and Democrats in the Senate and President Obama.
Here is the official statement released by MCAS Miramar:
MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. - It is with sincere regret that we announce the cancellation of the Miramar Air Show in San Diego, Calif. The shutdown of the U.S. government has necessitated this decision by the United States Marine Corps and we apologize for any inconvenience this cancellation has on our sponsors and the local San Diego Community.
Guidance from the Deputy Secretary of Defense mandates that non-excepted activities, including outreach events, are not authorized under the current shutdown guidelines. We want to thank everyone involved in the air show for their hard work, dedication and patience during such a period of fiscal duress and we look forward to this annual event to take place next year.
The show was scaled back from its usual three days to two after the Defense Department announced earlier this year that military flight demonstrations would not be allowed. That included the Navy's wildly popular Blue Angels. The event was scaled back due to automatic spending cuts known as "sequestration," which affected air shows around the country.
