Navy Base Lockdown Blamed on Airsoft Gun

The base commander at Naval Base Point Loma says it was an enlisted sailor playing with an airsoft pistol with a friend that prompted a shelter in place at the base Thursday.

Base commander Capt. Scott Adams told reporters that he learned of the report at about 10 a.m., and military security immediately responded to the incident.

Adams said the sailor was firing the pistol through a window from inside a barracks, and a witness observed that action.

After a portion of the base was given a shelter in place order, Naval Criminal Investigative Services (NCIS) personnel were able to locate the sailor and took him into custody at about 12:20 p.m. Another sailor linked to the action was also detained.

The shelter in place order was lifted by 2 p.m. and the base returned to normal operations.  Capt. Adams said he was unsure what charges the sailors may face.
