One Dead in Encinitas I-5 Big Rig Collision

One person was killed when two big rigs collided on the northbound Interstate 5 freeway overnight Monday, strewing debris across the roadway and prompting its closure.

One of the big rigs, carrying 50,000 pounds of produce, overturned as a result of the collision, which killed one of the drivers, according to the California Highway Patrol's online incident log. The collision occurred around 12:50 a.m. just south of La Costa Avenue, the CHP reported.

I-5 was closed between Leucadia Boulevard and La Costa Avenue. Traffic was being diverted off the interstate at both roads, according to the CHP.

Diesel fuel spilled in the collision covered two lanes for about 150 feet, the CHP reported.

One of the four northbound lanes was re-opened just before 5 a.m. The rest remained closed. Officials at the scene said it could take until 10 a.m. to clear the debris and fully reopen the freeway.
