The historic San Diego landmark celebrated its 150th birthday by setting sail from its usual location at the Maritime Museum downtown.

The Star of India is said to be the world's oldest active ship. The ship was originally named the Euterpe and first set sail in 1863 when it was launched at a shipyard on the Isle of Man in Great Britain.  It served as a cargo vessel in the India trade and sailed around the earth 21 times. Americans bought the ship in 1898 and renamed it the Star of India.  It was a group of San Diegans who bought the ship and had it towed here in 1927 where it was eventually restored in time for the 1976 U.S. bicentennial when the Star of India set sail for the first time in 50 years on San Diego Bay.
