Feds bust up a suspected heroin ring

(Akron) - Twenty people have been indicted as part of a major heroin ring in Akron.  Federal agents, Akron Police and investigators from the Summit County Sheriff's Office culminated a three year investigation into the ring allegedly headed up by 36-year old Garland Phelps Jr.

Investigators say Phelps directed the operation which brought heroin into Akron from Atlanta and Chicago.

Mike Tobin with the U.S. Attorney's office in Cleveland says the suspects are charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute heroin.

Phelps' charges include a death specification enhancement.  Investigators say a person died Dec. 25, 2012 as a result of heroin sold by Phelps.

Agents and officers fanned out across Akron at dawn Tuesday taking suspects into custody.
